My Last Lecture
If I were to give a last lecture to future students in this course, I would start with the most important principle: never allow your business to become more important than your family. That isn't to say that sacrifices in the home for the good of your company shouldn't occasionally be made, because a strong business will benefit your family. But in terms of which thing becomes most important in your life, it should always be your family.
Second, you must always be prepared. You should not start a business until you truly know the in's and out's of that market, because you will set yourself up for failure. For example, just because you have been given a new camera doesn't mean you should immediately start a photography business. Learn about the business first, set up your own business plan, and make sure that what you can offer your clients is professional.
Thirdly, remember your goals. It can be easy to get discouraged and lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel. Creating a thriving business is going to be hard work, and that means that it is not going to be easy. As author Adriana Locke once said, “The best things in life don’t come easy, but those things are the ones worth the sacrifice.” Before you decide to thrown in the towel, think back to your goals and what you wanted to accomplish. In fact, keep these goals close to you as you begin your business journey. For example, writing your goals down on a piece of paper and posting it on the wall for you to look at daily is something that can really help you to keep going when you want to give up. Remembering your goals will also give you the courage to take a chance on something when you may be too afraid to do so. Your goals should be always present in your heart and mind as you search for success.
Lastly, it is important to remember that money isn't everything, and that it cannot by you happiness. Sure, it can buy you a comfortable house, a nice car, enough money to feel financially secure, and that's okay. But once it becomes your only aim, you will start to become someone you don't want to be. Never allow money to become most important to you, because it will not give you everything you need. It may give you everything you want, but it will not give you everything you need.
